Scales are the foundation of any musician’s improvisational vocabulary. Understanding how scales relate to specific chords and progressions broadens the player’s palette of possibilities when improvising. Using Tom Dempsey’s Jazz Scales Handbook as your guide, you’ll learn how to apply and improvise with 20 of the most commonly used scales found in jazz.

”I’ll cover 20 of the most commonly used scales found in jazz, although ALL of these scales can be applied to any genre. So, if you’re a rock player, blues player or even a country player — learning these scales will help you become a better soloist. As you work through the Jazz Scales Handbook, you’re going to learn how to play these 20 scales, identify their distinctive sonic colors, and then apply them in a jazz setting.”

For each of the 20 scales, Tom will show you one 2-octave fingering for both the scale, and the arpeggio of the parent chord. You’ll learn the formula for each of the following 20 scales so that you can easily play them anywhere on the fretboard, in any key.

20 Jazz Scale Studies: Major Pentatonic Scale, Minor Pentatonic Scale, Blues Scale, Auxiliary Blues Scale, Major Scale (Ionian), Dorian Scale, Phrygian Scale, Lydian Scale, Mixolydian Scale, Aeolian Scale, Locrian Scale, Diminished Scale, Whole Tone Scale, Harmonic Minor Scale, Jazz Melodic Minor Scale, Lydian Augmented Scale, Lydian Dominant Scale, Altered Scale (Super Locrian), Mixolydian b6 Scale, and BeBop Scale.

Tom will also point out the distinctive characteristics of each scale as a sonic color to help you craft effective creative approaches. Additionally, you’ll learn a musical example that’s derived from this sound so that you can immediately apply it to your improvisational vocabulary.

”There are two segments dedicated for each scale. In the first segment, I'll show you the fingering of the scale that we're going to use. You'll learn about the scale and one fingering of that scale. In the second segment, you'll learn how to apply the scale in a real jazz setting with a backing track. This will help you to learn how to transition from playing the scale to playing music with the scale. All of this is in an effort to build up your repertoire of scales and improvisational ideas.”

Arpeggios are the foundation of any great jazz improviser's vocabulary. They're easy enough to learn but the real challenge is making them sound musical.

Students of jazz guitar usually start by developing a vocabulary of arpeggio-based licks from other players. As the vocabulary grows, so does the student's ability to craft their own original arpeggio-based lines and musical ideas.

This collection of 30 Jazz Arpeggio Licks from Tom Dempsey covers a wide range of arpeggio-based licks across a variety of commonly encountered jazz harmonies and progressions.

For each of the 30 licks, Tom will demonstrate an arpeggio-based musical idea over a rhythm track. Tom shows you the arpeggio, explains how it connects to the harmony, and then breaks down the lick for you, note-by-note, phrase-by-phrase.

The first 20 lessons will be focused on 20 single-chord arpeggios that every jazz player should know. In each lesson, I'll give you one fingering example of that arpeggio as well as a musical idea that comes from that fingering. For these first 20 lessons, I'll demonstrate over static chords played with a jazz backing track.

The last 10 lessons will be focused on stringing arpeggio licks together, over standard jazz progressions. All 30 of the lessons will help you develop skills for creating arpeggio-based musical ideas that bring out the sound of the chords without sounding like you're just running arpeggios.

You'll work on riff-based licks in the style of Charlie Christian, dominant 7th chord licks, sequential diminished ideas, licks to add tension to your melodic lines, musical ideas for 2-5-1 progressions, ways to substitute arpeggios and create more complex musical lines, 2-5 minor licks to broaden your repertoire of improvisational ideas, arpeggio-based lines for minor progressions, and many more creative and melodic approaches for crafting musical ideas based on arpeggios.

All of the licks are tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes. You'll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can play, loop and/or slow down the tab and notation as you work through the lessons. Plus, Tom generously includes all of the rhythm tracks for you to work with on your own.

Play anything, in any key, anywhere on the neck.

Do you remember when someone handed you the keys to your very first car? It probably wasn’t brand-spanking new, maybe struggled a bit going up hills, and might have even been older than you at the time, but that ear-to-ear grin plastered on your face for months to come had little to do with the car itself — it was all about your new-found freedom to do anything and go anywhere, anytime you wanted to. Freedom — that was the rush.

Tom Dempsey is handing you another set of keys with Fretboard Phenom. These keys will bring you a different form of freedom — fretboard freedom. And just like that first car, you’ll enjoy the rush of freedom to play anything, anytime and anywhere on the fretboard.

Guitar players naturally tend to favor certain positions and certain fingerings for scales in relationship to that scale’s parent key. Think G minor pentatonic for example; 3rd position, right? But there are many other positions to play that scale on the fretboard of a guitar. Maybe we know one or two more of them but that still leaves all of the other positions completely in the dark, forcing us to jump around the fretboard to play over changes. This holds true for every scale!

Deep down inside we all know this to be true but we remain handcuffed to the familiar because we’re creatures of habit, a little bit lazy, and mostly because we haven’t yet discovered an easy, fool-proof way to unlock the fretboard for us.

As you might imagine, we’ve seen a lot of great fretboard navigation systems over the years. They all work IF the student is willing to put in the time and energy to grasp their logic and then embed that logic in their muscle memory. And therein lies the rub — our students simply do not have ample time to invest in these more elaborate, time-consuming approaches.

That’s why we freaked when Tom presented his method to us — it took no time at all to grasp the logic, and all a student has to do is commit just five ‘tonality shapes’ to memory and they’re off and running. Sure, it’ll take time becoming comfortable and fluid improvising within those shapes, but certainly not as much time as the other methods we’ve seen.

Another significant distinction with Tom’s method is the learning process itself - you’ll learn and practice ALL of the tonality shapes with video playalongs and practice rhythm tracks. You’ll play your way through the course rather than struggle through charts of boring exercises.

In the first section of the course, Tom guides you through the entire Major Pentatonic, Minor Pentatonic, Blues Scale and Major Scale systems. Each of these systems features an overview, a presentation of the correlating tonality shapes, a series of playalongs covering the entire neck, a creative application demonstrating the system in an improvisational and musical context, and a discussion on transposing the system to any key.

In the second section, Tom shows you how to connect multiple tonality shapes and multiple positions, which empowers you to play in any key, anywhere on the neck, over any given set of changes. This section also features overviews, the full series of playalongs covering the entire neck, creative applications and more guidance for transposition.

Fretboard Phenom includes over 100 video lessons and playalongs, PLUS Tom also includes a massive 721-page Reference Manual featuring all of the Fretboard Phenom material in ALL 12 keys and in ALL positions. You’ll also get 192 additional single and multi-positional practice rhythm tracks.

Jump in Fretboard Phenom, roll down the windows down, and speed your way to fretboard freedom!

50 licks you must know inspired by the greats of jazz blues guitar

Let’s do a little Soul Jazz collaborative filtering... If you dig Benson’s playing on the recordings with Jack McDuff, then you probably also dig Grant Green’s work on His Majesty King Funk, which of course means you’ve got Kenny Burrell’s Chitlins Con Carne on one of your playlists along with Wes Montgomery’s Bumpin’ On Sunset. OK, run all that through the filter, take into consideration that you play guitar, and out pops a forgone conclusion -- you will majorly dig this collection of 50 Soul Jazz Licks You MUST Know from Tom Dempsey.

All Music describes the music as "earthy, bluesy and melodic” with “repetitive, dance-like rhythms.” Soul Jazz, Jazz Blues, Funk Jazz or Funky Hard Bop -- call it what you will, but you know we’re talking about, but for the purpose of this learning adventure, we’ll stick to ‘Soul Jazz’ and gratefully acknowledge it’s soul, jazz, funk and blues influences.

Soul Jazz grooves are wide open and great fun to play over because the rhythmic and harmonic framework is relatively simple thereby providing a highly improvisational landscape to work with. However, in the words of Albert Collins, “Simple music is hard to play,” and that’s why this handpicked collection of licks will serve you very well by stoking your vocabulary with ample ideas, motifs and other tricks of the Soul Jazz trade.

Good news! You already have the toolset at your fingertips if you’re relatively familiar with double-stops, pentatonic scales, bends, octaves, repetition, the mixolydian mode and chromatics. So, not a lot of new rocket science to digest. It’s more about the phrasing, rhythmic feel and improvisational approaches that you’ll be focusing on.

More good news! Tom dug deep into the Soul Jazz monster guitarist roster for inspiration; Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Pat Martino, Melvin Sparks, John Scofield, Peter Bernstein, Eric Kasnow, Mark Whitfield, and Norman Brown are all paid homage to.

All of the licks are first presented over a rhythm track for context , which is then followed by a detailed breakdown of the line along with the techniques being employed to perform it. Everything is tabbed and notated, plus you'll also get all of the rhythm tracks to practice the lines with on your own.

Add these 50 Soul Jazz licks to your playlist today!

50 jazz licks you must know inspired by the genre's greats

Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to attempt playing any style of jazz guitar without copping inspiration and lickage from the masters of the form. What?! This ridiculous notion will self-destruct in ten seconds because that would unquestionably be an impossible mission. The six-string giants of jazz not only inspire us, they have authored the very vocabulary that we jazz guitarists quote to one degree or another in our improvisations. Much thanks to Tom Dempsey and this collection of 50 Jazz Master Licks You MUST Know, you're moments away from stoking your own vocabulary with 50 timeless, ear-grabbing lines from the best in the biz.

Jazz guitar is NOT about playing licks, far from it. Jazz is spontaneous, creative, original and a highly improvisational art form. Great jazz solos tell stories that shed tears, spark smiles and stop time. You'll spend countless disciplined years in the shed learning the language of jazz guitar and how to tell those stories in your own voice. Imitating, understanding and internalizing the vocabulary of the masters is an essential rite of passage for EVERY jazz guitarist. Getting a grip on the vernacular of jazz guitar empowers you to craft your own original lines and dialect.

Tom dug deep, wide and very selectively to take you on this learning adventure across the fretboards of such jazz guitar luminaries as Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, Tal Farlow, Barney Kessel, George Benson, Grant Green, Pat Martino, John Abercrombie, John Scofield, Pat Metheny and many more. You'll learn 50 highly versatile licks influenced by the music of these masters. Tom will also demonstrate how to apply the material in your own improvisations so that you can put the lines to work immediately.

All of the licks are presented over a rhythm track for context and then followed by a detailed breakdown of the line along with the techniques being employed to perform it. Everything is tabbed and notated, plus you get all of the rhythm tracks to practice the lines over by yourself.

Should you be captured or celebrated on stage by audiences near you, we will not disavow any knowledge of the learning path you followed to get there. 10, 9, 8, 7...
